Despite the fact that Warner Bros is creating a franchise out of one of the most recognizable properties in the world, the studio has definitely run into serious of challenges in their early going. The release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was one of the most divisive superhero movies in recent memory, while the recent release of Suicide Squad left a lot to be desired from fans as well.
As a result, Warner Bros has gone on the offensive by inviting journalists (particularly those who disliked BvS) to the set of Justice League to see watch their retooled approach first hand. They then released the first trailer for the movie at San Diego Comic Con last month and showed off the new film’s lively humor. Today actor Ben Affleck took to Twitter and personally revealed a huge villain appearance in Justice League, who was previously only spoke of in whispered rumors.
This morning Affleck posted the first live-action, feature film version of Deathstroke from the set of the Justice League.

The character of Deathstroke debuted in the pages of “Teen Titans” in 1980. The character, also known as Deathstroke the Terminator, has steadily worked his way up the pop culture ladder over the years. First starting out as the Teen Titans primary adversary, he has since graduated to bigger opponents, such as Batman and Green Arrow. Fans of the CW show will probably recognize the character from his appearances on Arrow, played by actor Manu Bennett. However, now the character has truly hit the big stage with his imminent debut in next year’s Justice League.
It has been confirmed that the big bad of the movie will be Darkseid’s uncle, Steppenwolf, a ranking officer in their intergalactic army. However, reports of the sub-villains have been close to non-existent, beyond the obvious speculation of a Joker cameo. This is the next clue to the true scope of the upcoming film. The footage has been confirmed to be taking place on the Flying Fox, Batman’s transport vehicle for the Justice League and the Batmobile. It would seem that Deathstroke would be attempting a raid or assault on the League, however it is all speculation at this point.
While we are on speculation, a report from The Wrap closely followed the reveal claiming that Deathstroke would be the primary adversary for Batman in the upcoming solo movie.
Ben Affleck wasn’t just teasing: Deathstroke will, in fact, be the main antagonist of the Batman standalone movie he’s directing, TheWrap has exclusively learned from an individual with knowledge of the situation.
If that is true, it would makes sense that Deathstroke would leave a lasting scar (either physical or emotional) during Justice League that may tie into a theme of the new film. This flies in the face of previous rumors that Batman would be facing off against a large number of his famous villains in the Arkham Asylum setting however. The movie is still in the script stage, so keep in mind there are multiple things that can and will change.
Another unanswered question is who is actually under the mask. There have long been rumors that Joe Manganiello had been a frontrunner for the part. However, it’s possible that the role will remain uncast until the villain appears in the Batman movie. For now let’s just appreciate that we are getting a big-screen version of Slade Wilson and that the Justice League movie will be grander than most are expecting.
Justice League opens on November 17th, 2017.
