The first trailer for Tomb Raider dropped last night and immediately sent ripples through the film industry. While the movie looks to be far from an Oscar contender, it does look like a thrill ride scientifically designed to make you gobble popcorn at the theater. However, most would be surprised by the amount of work that it takes to make a major tent pole movie and the production team behind Tomb Raider want you to pay attention to the effort that has gone into next year’s release with a series of new featurettes.
Alicia Vikander blazed onto the screen with 2015’s Ex Machina and finished off the year with an Academy Award win for The Danish Girl. Well it seems that she has once again proven to be a special talent by re-sculpting her body and mind to become a true action star as Lara Croft.
In the new video, we see the training, mental preparation, and the stunt work that went into Vikander’s performance. Fresh off the success of Wonder Woman, Croft is in position to once again become one of the biggest action icons in cinema, so the stakes are certainly high for all involved. Check out the behind-the-scenes featurette:
The new movie is closely based on the rebooted series created by Square Enix. The games follow a young Lara Croft who is not yet a hero. However, the adventurer hardens over time after scavenging for food, having to kill wild animals, and ultimately deadly enemies to survive. That same approach is being used for the upcoming reboot, which should give fans of the game series reason to rejoice. Director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) clearly is a gamer, as the movie recreates many specific moments and set pieces from the 2013 game Tomb Raider, which bodes well for action-adventure fans worldwide.
In fact, IGN was so enamored by the similarities that they created a side-by-side comparison of the game and new trailer and the results are startling. If you pay attention, there are numerous Easter eggs and reveals that gamers should appreciate, while also giving us the clearest idea of the plot so far. The video game movie formula is far from being cracked, however doing a literal adaptation of the game is actually an approach that few have utilized. We will find out if it works with moviegoers in about six monts. Check out the video:
With an actress the caliber of Vikander bringing Lara Croft to three-dimensional life and action torn straight out of the game, this has the chance to be a break out movie this Spring. There is a lot more to come.
Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.
Tomb Raider opens on March 16th, 2018.
