It’s hard to dismiss the fact that we are living in the era of geek at the movies. When historians take a look at how we got to this point, it will be hard to overlook the influence of Steven Spielberg over the development of modern day pop culture. One writer, Ernest Cline, collected his love of geek culture and all things Spielbergian with his best-selling novel, Ready Player One.
The book took place decades in the future in a dystopian landscape where society has turned inward to a virtual reality program known as the OASIS. In this digital reality all things are possible with endless characters from the real world of fiction. The creator of OASIS, played by Mark Rylance (The BFG) then holds a Willy Wonka style contest in which the winner gets endless wealth and the Macguffin of the story. X-Men: Apocalypse’s Tye Sheridan stars in the film as Wade Watts, a teen with ambitions to dominate the virtual landscape and win the grand prize.
In a couple of short weeks the long-awaited big-screen adaptation is coming to theaters with none other than Spielberg himself in the director’s chair. There has rarely been an opportunity for such a meta experience, with Spielberg able to play with some of his old creations, while adding countless pop culture icons ranging from The Iron Giant to Street Fighter. It will be interesting to see how Warner Bros markets the film, especially due to the overload of awesome imagery from the world of cinema, video games, and other geek spaces that should be a huge draw.
The movie is slated for release in late March and is yet another summer-sized movie that audiences will be able to enjoy in early 2018. There is a lot of time for the excitement to build, but in the meantime, check out the official trailer from WB:
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player One opens on March 30th, 2018.
