In 2013, director Guillermo Del Toro made a film that spoke to geeks in many different languages. Pacific Rim was his original idea that paid homage to anime, mech warfare, and Godzilla flicks of the past, with a film that mashed up various science-fiction elements in route to grossing over $400 million dollars worldwide. Del Toro has stepped aside for the upcoming sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, that looks to carry the baton for the franchise in the near future. And the future is coming sooner than we all might think.
The sequel is directed by Steven DeKnight, who was the showrunner for the first season of Daredevil. He replaces Del Toro, who has already given the franchise its distinct look, surely the hope is that DeKnight can deliver a script to match the spectacle. This time around the story follows, Jake played by John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), the son of Stacker Pentecost Pacific Rim’s Idris Elba. Once again the Earth is threatened by giant monsters, known as kaiju, who have climbed out of the depths of the tectonic plates at the bottom of the ocean.
The movie seems to have a lot in common with J.J. Abrams 2009 reboot of Star Trek. Both films have rebellious sons of fallen military heroes, who are given a second chance to follow in the fathers’ footsteps. However, the Pacific Rim franchise has only a fraction of the mythology, backstory, and rabid fanbase, which should allow for the movie to have more room to create its own identity. While the VFX team has seemingly held up the lofty standards set by the first film. Pacific Rim: Uprising looks to be a movie custom-made for the big-screen experience. Check out the trailer:
The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising. John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
Pacific Rim: Uprising opens in theaters on March 23rd, 2018.
