Every trilogy doesn’t have to be the greatest of all time. Sometimes all audiences wants is an entertaining beginning, middle, and end of a story. With that in mind, the third chapter, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, is coming down the pipeline to complete the story that began with 2014’s The Maze Runner.
In 2014, the popular YA novel was adapted into a surprisingly engaging movie that blended elements of science fiction with teenage drama. It was followed up with The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, a much more convoluted movie that took the group of survivors outside of the maze as they attempt to find out their true identity and the motives behind the mysterious WCKD corporation.
The third installment had a real-world tragedy during the filming, as series star Dylan O’Brien sustained a life-threatening injury that halted the film’s production. Today, the first trailer has dropped for the third film in the series and it’s clear that O’Brien is back in form. The sizzle reel first recalls the adventure and story beats of the first two movies, before diving into the upcoming final chapter.
All of the franchise stars are back on board, including Kaya Scodelario (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Phineas and Ferb), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Aiden Gillan (Game of Thrones), and Barry Pepper (Monster Trucks), while director Wes Ball returns for his third time behind the camera. This time the survivors of WCKD’s malicious experimentation are taking the fight to the source. Most are hoping that this can recapture the fun of the first movie, as the second proved to be overly convoluted sequel that slowed the momentum of the series.
One nagging concern about this film series, since The Scorch Trials, is the lack of actual maze running. It seems the movie (presumably following the lead of the books), will lean into being a straight forward action movie and will leave behind the silly walls. Check it out:
In the epic finale to the Maze Runner saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opens on January 26th, 2018.
