MARVEL’S RUNAWAYS Teaser Trailer: Super-Villain Parents Just Don’t Understand

There are no visible boundaries for the superhero genre on television and Hulu is the next network to throw their hat in the game. Following in the path forged by Netflix’s partnership with Marvel, the streaming service is prepping to unveil their own series based on The Runaways comic series this November.

The Runaways comic series first hit stores in 2003 and was a huge hit thanks largely to the creative talents of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The comic and upcoming TV series, Marvel’s Runawaystells the story of a diverse group of teenagers that discover that they have super powers. However, things get complicated when they discover that their parents are all members of super-villain secret society. The teens form a bond and go on the run from their parents, while being faced with their own inner demons and turmoil. Here is a breakdown of the main characters that you will find in Marvel’s Runaways:

Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder: A loud-and-proud nerd. Admittedly a bit of a loner, Alex spends much of his free-time playing video games, but deep down, what he wants most is to reunite his childhood group of friends.

Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru: Tough, intelligent, and independent–embodies teenage angst. A budding “Wiccan,” Nico’s carefully crafted goth appearance isolates her from her peers and family, but maybe what she really needs is someone to talk to.

Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean: A model-perfect exterior with a lot going on behind her professionally whitened smile, is burdened by the lofty expectations and responsibilities put upon her by her parents. Underneath her veneer of privilege and perfection, Karolina is experiencing a newfound eagerness to explore her identity and pursue her own desires.

Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes: A purple-haired, bespectacled, contemporary riot grrrl. Never passing up a moment to stand on a soapbox, Gert sometimes wields her persona as a brash social justice warrior to mask her true feelings.

Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein: A lacrosse-playing, high school heartthrob. While many write him off as a dumb jock, Chase exhibits flashes of untapped brilliance in engineering, not unlike his wildly successful father’s.

Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez: The youngest and most innocent member of her friend group, is known for her peppy positivity and a deep yearning to belong.

The first teaser trailer debuted today at New York Comic Con and it looks like one of the more faithful adaptations of any Marvel production. Despite a television budget, they aren’t avoiding many of the comic’s more far out ideas. Evidenced by their pet dinosaur, Old Lace, making a blink-and-you-missed-it appearance in the sizzle reel. While the show has the feel of a teen drama, they aren’t shy from dropping curse words in the teaser signaling that the series may have more of an edge to it than many may be expecting.

The series is created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who both made their name with shows like The O.C. and Gossip Girl. The show stars Rhenzy Feliz, Allegra Acosta, Lyrica Okano, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, and Virginia Gardner, as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s James Marsters.
