One of the biggest surprises of 2015 was the astronomical success of Jurassic World, the sequel and reboot to Spielberg’s seminal blockbuster Jurassic Park. The follow-up surpassed all expectations with a huge $208 million dollar opening and went on to gross over $1.6 billion dollars worldwide. Universal wasted no time getting the next installment in the pipeline and the result is next year’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Auteur filmmaker J.A. Bayona (The Impossible) was chosen to helm the follow-up and early reports seemed to indicate that the sequel would be a more visceral and scary installment to the series. Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) return to their roles as the brawn and the brains of the film. They are also joined by B.D. Wong (Focus), Justice Smith (The Get Down), and Jeff Goldblum (Thor: Ragnarok) returns in his iconic role as Ian Malcolm, a scientist who respects the dangers of tampering with nature.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom follows the leads as they head a dangerous rescue mission to rescue the genetically created dinosaurs from the island, before an active volcano creates an extinction level event. The set-up for the sequel seems to be an odd direction for the franchise. We have already spent multiple films on Isla Nublar and despite the awe and spectacle, the first teaser trailer seems to be promoting a movie that we have largely seen before. Whether it’s another escape in the sphere pods or the big fish getting eaten by a bigger fish, it all feels like we have been here before.
It’s possible that Bayona and Universal are simply holding their cards close to their vest and only giving us an early reveal. The movie is still over a half a year away and for all we know the volcano sequence is the first act set piece that kicks the movie into gear. Regardless, it certainly has the trademark Universal amusement park ride feel that the franchise mastered decades ago. Hopefully this turns out to be more than another fun popcorn flick from the franchise. Check out the trailer:
It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.
When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.
With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before. Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
