In 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes caught audiences off guard with a surprisingly emotional and grounded reboot of the franchise that first blew audiences’ minds in 1968. Director Rupert Wyatt’s reimagining of the origin story for how apes took over the Earth was a truly unexpected treat, while the follow-up Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, brought the franchise to the edge of award consideration.
The third movie in the rebooted series is right around the corner and it looks as if the franchise might be elevated to yet another level. In the previous series – and in this film’s timeline – Caesar is regarded as a hero. The trilogy has deliberately taken its time in building his legend and it seems that it will all culminate in this third film, War for the Planet of the Apes.
This newest installment adds Woody Harrelson to the cast, who is in the midst of another great run of roles. He is currently filming on the upcoming Star Wars’ Han Solo project and looks to be filling out the villain role, sans a mustache to twirl.
If you are a fan of comic book movies, you probably have come to know the name Matt Reeves. Not for the the superhero movies that he has made, but for what his next project is – The Batman. Reeves has taken over the director’s chair from Ben Affleck and is reportedly reworking the script and story for the upcoming comic book film. For many, it will be hard to look at this trailer full of iconic imagery and not think about the possibilities for the director’s future in the DC universe.
The full trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes gives us our most complete look at the story and stakes in the upcoming movie. The lines are blurred as the end of mankind is on the brink, with a pending war between primates and humans. Judging from the previous movies, we should be getting something much different than expected and hopefully this is the performance that finally puts motion-capture legend Andy Serkis on the red carpet at next year’s Academy Awards. Enjoy the trailer.
