Whether you are a fan of the live-action films of the DC cinematic universe or not, it’s hard to not appreciate the animated movies created by DC Animation for Warner Bros. They have been the sandboxes where many future feature films created their foundation, while also educating audiences to the expansive world and characters of DC Comics.
Much like Wonder Woman and Batman: Assault on Arkham, laid the foundation for what would become Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman this summer and last year’s Suicide Squad. Once again DC Animation is introducing a new set of heroes and villains with their next upcoming animated movie, Justice League Dark.
The upcoming animated film is an R-rated adventure that will see the Justice League turn to the magical heroes and anti-heroes of DC, including John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Etrigan the Demon, and Deadman.
One of the biggest treats of the upcoming film is the voice cast. Matt Ryan returns to voice Constantine after playing the character on television, both in his own show and on guest appearances on CW’s Arrow. In addition, the cast of the movie also includes notable actors like Rosario Dawson (Luke Cage), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), and Jerry O’Connell (My Secret Identity).
There is a feature film of Justice League Dark, tentatively titled Dark Universe, in the works with Doug Liman in the director’s chair. The movie is in active development and is expected to join the DC Extended Universe in just a few years, so there is another solid reason to check out their animated adventure. However, if you are still on the fence, Playstation has provided us with a 6-minute preview of the film and its opening credits.
In the clip, we see that everyday citizens are getting hypnotized by
Trump demons and killing those around them due to terrifying hallucinations. We see the introduction of the Justice League, who are in over their heads, before hitting us with the credit sequence. It’s a satisfying introduction into the film’s world and should give viewers a clear idea of the upcoming release. Check it out!
Justice League Dark finds the world under attack from supernatural forces that prompts the Justice League’s Batman to seek aid from occult investigator John Constantine. Constantine forms a team of other supernatural superheroes — Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon — to help save the world.
Justice League Dark will debut digitally on January 24, 2017 and on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7, 2017.
