Marvel Studios is at it again. This time they are using the immense amount of creative capital they’ve accumulated over the past decade to push their characters in some unexpected ways. While the state of the MCU is more than stable, no character needed a franchise makeover more than Thor. With that in mind, Marvel looked inward after the unexpected success of Guardians of the Galaxy and heeded the blueprint to the cosmic side of the MCU that director James Gunn designed. Enter Taika Waititi.
The studio decided to change directions after a financially successful yet oft-forgotten sequel, Thor: The Dark World, and hired Waititi, the director of What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople, to helm Thor: Ragnarok. The third chapter of the Asgardian’s journey through the MCU is a combination of the “Ragnarok'” comic runs and the “Planet Hulk” comic stories, shot through the filter of a 80’s sci-fi lens.
Today the first teaser trailer for Thor: Ragnarok was released and it’s wilder…and more colorful than could be expected. There’s a lot to digest with the trailer set to the classic rock jam, “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin. Among the more notable moments are the appearance of Hela the lord of the underworld, played by Cate Blanchett. She shows off her power by attacking Asgard, banishing Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and destroying his signature weapon, Mjolnir. Thor then finds himself captive on an new alien planet with appearances from Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, and Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk. There’s a myriad of Easter eggs and interesting moments that suggest a layered film for Marvel fans. Enjoy the trailer!
Thor: Ragnarok opens on November 3rd, 2017.
