There have already been multiple blockbusters this month and there are still a few more movies that are worthy of your attention. There is seemingly a smash hit release every weekend, but sometimes the last punch is the most effective. The creators behind Ghost in the Shell certainly hope that the motto holds true when they release their upcoming cyber-thriller on the final day of March. The new action film has a chance to be the sleeper hit of the season and Paramount is eager to show everyone exactly why.
The Ghost in the Shell movie is an adaptation of the wildly popular manga and anime from the end of the last century. The property was first created by Masamune Shirow in a 1985 manga that went on to inspire one of anime’s classic films in 1995. The story centers on Major Motoko Kusanagi, a counter-terrorism specialist in the near future who also happens to be almost completely cybernetic. In addition to its kinetic action scenes, Ghost in the Shell is heavy on political intrigue and social commentary on where our technology is headed and what complications may arise from the proliferation of it.
It’s also hard to bring up Ghost in the Shell without mentioning the controversy that has been swirling around the casting of the lead in the production. Many strongly felt that this was an opportunity to give a new Asian actress the chance to shine at the head of a major franchise. However, Paramount and the film’s creators opted to go with Johansson, who has a proven record of success at the box-office, with hits under her belt like Lucy and The Avengers franchise.
On the last day of the month, Paramount Pictures will be releasing their long-awaited feature film based on the property. In an effort to give potential ticket buyers a taste of the flavor that’s to come in the upcoming movie, they have released the first five minutes of Ghost in the Shell. The scene cross-cuts between a covert meeting where new cyber-tech is being revealed and Major (Scarlett Johansson) preparing to leap into action.
The sequence should look familiar to those who have watched the original anime. Much of it is a shot-for-shot replication in which the Major disrobes to avoid detection and infiltrates a stronghold with jaw-dropping agility and precision. Not bad for a springtime release. Enjoy the clip!
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic¹s advancements in cyber technology.
Ghost in the Shell opens on March 31st, 2017.
