This summer there’s an embarrassment of riches at movie theaters, as the summer blockbuster season is primed to be extremely memorable. Spider-Man: Homecoming, Wonder Woman, and War for the Planet of the Apes, are just some of the offerings for fans of high-concept filmmaking. While comic books are the go to source material for event movies in the modern age, novels are still a huge pool of inspiration for new films.
If you are looking to adapt books for the big-screen, aside from William Shakespeare, there may be no one with a better resume than author Stephen King. The creator of countless classics including The Shining, Carrie, and Misery, among others, is now the source of a new budding franchise for Sony Pictures, with their upcoming adaptation of The Dark Tower.
The film stars Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) as Roland Deschain, who’s also known as the Gunslinger. He’s a legendary figure in his dysptopian world that’s made it his mission to track down the Man in Black played by Matthew McConaughey and to take down the deadly Dark Tower.
The movie is directed by Nikoloj Arcel (The Affair) and if The Dark Tower proves to be a hit, there is a huge multimedia plan to expand the film into a full-fledged universe. A television show is in the works that is rumored to focus on the Gunslinger’s younger years. While there’s certainly room for sequel options on the big-screen that have already been organically built into the film’s narrative. It looks like this has the opportunity to be a sleeper hit this summer. Enjoy the trailer.
The Dark Tower opens on August 4th, 2017.
