The long wait is over as Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds, director David Leitch, and Fox Studios, have finally found the actor to bring the X-Men franchise into the future. Ever since the Deadpool popped out of the bathroom during the post-credits scene in his movie, fans and the media have been clamoring to find out who would be charged with bringing the mutant known as Cable to the big-screen.
Over the past couple of months several notable names have surfaced as being in contention for the role. Russell Crowe (Man of Steel), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Michael Shannon (Midnight Special), and even Brad Pitt were circling the role at different points. With Pitt only pulling out due to scheduling conflicts, probably due to the extensive sequel commitment inherent in the role and franchise.
Today, the mystery has finally been put to an end. In an exclusive report from THR, actor Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War, Sicario, The Goonies) has landed the most coveted superhero role of the year as Cable in the upcoming Deadpool 2. According to the report, Brolin has signed a four-picture deal that would conceivably include the upcoming adaptation of X-Force.
Some may be shocked that Brolin will be crossing the comic book movie streams, by portraying both Cable AND Thanos, the most powerful villain in the entire Marvel cinematic universe. Brolin is currently filming Avengers: Infinity War, which is the shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of all time. However, he’ll get away with appearing in both the MCU and the X-Men universe because his role as Thanos will be entirely motion capture.
The casting of Brolin was a pleasant surprise for many fans, none bigger than the creator of both Deadpool and Cable himself, Rob Liefeld. Today, the comic artist gave his thoughts on the casting to Comicbook.com and he sounds more than enthusiastic:
“Josh Brolin brings both the gravitas as well as the physicality required to bring Cable to life on the big screen! He’s an amazing actor and I’m as excited as anyone to see him paired with Ryan Reynolds, Zazie Beets in Deadpool 2!! Cable, Domino and Deadpool people!! It’s happening!!!”
Cable is the adult son of Scott “Cyclops” Summers from the future, who time travels to the past (our present) in an attempt to save the world. He’s militaristic, rugged, and no-nonsense, and is not adverse to a fight. Just don’t expect a lengthy monologue or quick-witted sense of humor. Cable will serve as the straight man to Deadpool’s juvenile antics, so it can be assumed Brolin and Reynolds had great chemistry during the audition process.
Not much is known about the plot of the second installment of Deadpool beyond the addition of Beets and Brolin. It should be safe to assume that Cable’s backstory will be rewritten to better fit in with the established elements of Fox’s X-Men cinematic universe. However, expect time travel to at least be a small element of the film and for Deadpool to call out all of the cliches of the sub-genre.
Now that the core of the next Deadpool film has been cast, we can expect more news to come flying in. Particularly a reveal on who the villain of the film is, as well as how this sequel will fit in with the rest of the X-verse.
Deadpool 2 will be released in theaters in 2018.
