The beginning of the summer movie season starts in March this year. That month will be full of blockbusters including the X-Men tale Logan, the return of the King in Kong: Skull Island, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will come to three-dimensional life. However, despite all of those potential hit movies, there is one movie that holds the hopes of a generation – Power Rangers.
The reboot of the immensely popular 1990’s children’s show is directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) for Lionsgate, who is looking to bring the franchise into the 21st century. He has surrounded his young cast of mostly unknown actors with some top-notch Hollywood talent, including Bill Hader as Alpha 5, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.
The trailer also reveals the giant mech robots known affectionately as Zords, for the first time, as well as their adversary Goldar. The Zord’s new designs reflect their prehistoric inspirations, including a T-Rex, triceratops, sabertooth tiger, mastadon, and pterodactyl. However, their true power is revealed when they combine to form into Megazord. The designs have been modified, however Israelite has managed to shoot the action with a dreamlike haze that evokes the camp of the original show, while setting it apart from other franchises.
It’s yet to be seen if the movie’s combination of inspirations ranging from Chronicle to Pacific Rim will benefit the film in the end. But it should be noted that Academy Award nominated Bryan Cranston has been a huge supporter of the updated “Dark Knight” styled take on the film. He claims that the new, mature approach is what got him to return to the franchise, after being a voice over artist on the original show early in his career. Luckily for fans, there is only a two month wait to find out if it will all work out. Enjoy the trailer!
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
