OFFICIAL: Bang! THE PUNISHER is Getting His Own Solo Series On Netflix

Marvel Studios has made a lot of smart decisions during the creation of their cinematic empire. However, one strength that has proven to be the backbone of both their television and film worlds, is their impeccable casting of their superheroes they bring to life. It began with the inspired casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, which has served as the backbone of the MCU and their streak continued as recently as last month with the casting of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher on Daredevil.

Daredevil has been a huge success for the studio (and industry), as the Netflix series has blown the doors open for gritty and mature storytelling within the MCU. The success of the show and its follow-up Jessica Jones, has whet the audience’s appetite and there are more series in the pipeline, including Luke Cage, Iron Fistand The Defenders. However, once Bernthal stepped on to the screen, the attention of fans everywhere turned to when the Punisher would get his own solo series.

The news officially came this morning as Marvel Studios have announced that Netflix has ordered a full season of The Punisher, with Bernthal leading his own series. Bernthal has been a fan favorite since playing Shane on The Walking Dead, before transitioning to film with standout roles in movies such as Fury and The Wolf of Wall Street. Marvel knows when they have a good thing and have locked the actor up as the iconic character. Producer and writer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) will serve as the showrunner for the upcoming series, which keeps with Marvel/Netflix’s trend of cherry picking top talent from the world of TV.

The options are wide open for where the Punisher’s story could go. However, things will crystalize as the upcoming The Defenders series comes together, with shooting scheduled for the end of the year. While the Punisher wasn’t one of the original series folding into the team-up show, it’s hard to imagine that the character won’t make his presence felt. This is yet another great announcement for Marvel fans, as it seems that another legendary character will be done justice. Here is the statement from Marvel Studios.

Official Press Release:

Netflix has ordered a full first season of “Marvel’s The Punisher,” continuing their unprecedented collaboration with Marvel Television.

Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, introduced to fans earlier this year in the second season of the Netflix original series “Marvel’s Daredevil,” with Steve Lightfoot (“Hannibal”) serving as Executive Producer and Showrunner in addition to writing the series’ first two episodes.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”

“Marvel’s The Punisher” marks the sixth series ordered thus far as part of the groundbreaking collaboration between Marvel Television and Netflix including the upcoming “Marvel’s Luke Cage,” “Marvel’s Iron Fist,” “Marvel’s The Defenders” and the Peabody Award-winning “Marvel’s Jessica Jones.”

“Marvel’s The Punisher” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

The Punisher’s first season does not have a release date yet.
