There aren’t many rules in the world of comic book storytelling. The stories could be take place in the darkest back alley or in the far reaches of space. They could focus on African kings or the adventures of an intergalactic talking duck. However what is certain, is that no one stays dead forever in the comic book world.
Marvel Studios has managed to adapt their library of characters and stories over the past ten years and all of the films will culminate in the comic book genre’s most ambitious project ever with Avengers: Infinity War. Every major hero that has graced the screen over the past decade including Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Star Lord, Spider-Man, and more will be joining forces to take on the deadly space titan, Thanos.
[Spoiler Alert for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.]
Marvel started May off with the much anticipated sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2., which has been a huge moneymaker, while also pushing the story of Peter Quill and his band of misfits even further. The biggest shock took place in the last act of the film when Yondu, played by Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead), gave his own life to save his adopted son, Star Lord. His sacrifice is the emotional punch that elevates the movie above its “turd” jokes and is one of the franchise’s most memorable moments. However it seems that Yondu has not made his last appearance in the MCU. That Hashtag Show have come across a casting notice that is looking for a stand-in for Michael Rooker’s Yondu to film extensively at the end of the month.
It’s unclear how Yondu will fit into the movie. Infinity War will follow Thanos’ conquest to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet and he will have the power to bring people back from the dead via the Soul Stone. However, it’s just as likely that Yondu could be in a flashback scene, a hologram, or an illusion conjured by Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch. What is important to note is that the character will be seen on-screen another time, which should be a relief to his fans, particularly after GOTG director James Gunn claimed that Rooker would not return in the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, Gunn has already responded to the story of Yondu’s return as “False” on Twitter, however it still doesn’t explain why there is a formal casting call currently searching for a stand-in and why Rooker had already been spotted visiting the set previously.
We are a year away from the biggest comic book movie event ever created and we will have a lot more to come on the crown jewel of the third phase of the MCU. It will be interesting to monitor if any other deceased MCU characters show up on set, as Avengers: Infinity War still has months left in its shooting schedule.
Avengers: Infinity War opens on May 4th, 2018.
