It has been an up and down year for the mutants of the X-Men universe. Deadpool kicked off the year with a bang and unexpectedly became the most successful superhero film ever for Fox Studios. While the recently released X-Men: Apocalypse did not surpass any expectations, either critically or at the box-office. However, there are more bullets in the chamber for Fox’s upcoming slate and the next movie to hit theaters will be the currently shooting Wolverine 3.
There have been a whirlwind of rumors around the project touted as Hugh Jackman’s last time wearing the shiny claws. The signs have pointed to the film having elements of the “Old Man Logan” comic storyline, while it has been confirmed that the movie will indeed take place in the future. As well as reports that the eventual title may be Weapon X. The supporting cast is rounded out with Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X, joined by Stephen Merchant, Elise Neal, along with Boyd Holbrook, and Richard E. Grant as the central villains of the piece.
Recently, Superherohype broke the news that X-23 would be making her debut in the currently untitled, Wolverine 3. X-23 is the female clone of Logan, possessing a similar powerset as the original and who now wears the mantle of Wolverine in the comics. Which explains why there has so much speculation on who will be cast in the role, as it could represent the future of the X-Men franchise.
We now have some answers. Our source that tipped us and That Hashtag Show on Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist and Carrie Anne Moss’ return in the Iron Fist show has provided us with some interesting intel on Juarez, the shooting title for Wolverine 3. It’s an insightful character breakdown for a role that seems to be none other than X-23 herself:
[ZOE] 12 to 15 year-old girl. Still a child, but a wounded badass, a pound puppy, raised in captivity in a time of battle, without support systems of normal childhood. She has no family and until now, has never left the compound in which she was born. She has an authentic intensity – her expressions & body language speak volumes, without words. Once released in the outside world, everything is new – every experience and every image a first. This does not mean everything is wonderful or wondrous. Some things she sees (things we might regard as conventional) may scare her or anger her and things we may find interesting may bore her. She has not been instructed in many social conventions – she can eat like an animal. She studies and often mimics people’s behavior. She has a high IQ, but is also a temperamental, impulsive and feral creature that can raise genuine mayhem. She is a girl that has never been kissed. Looking for a REAL girl – not made up or done up. Also with genuine edge, not made up or put on. Martial arts or gymnastics experience preferred but not necessary – but actress must be extremely physical and able to improvise scenes without necessarily resorting to speech. Do NOT play it “cute”.
This is one of the most in-depth character breakdowns that I have come across, yet is a spot-on description of a cinematic interpretation of X-23. It seems that she has been raised from inception in captivity (presumably in Weapon X) and will finally break free in the upcoming movie. It looks as if her introduction will serve as her origin story as well.
Her age is also of interest, as the character’s 12-15 year old age range, will help to narrow speculation on the casting of the role. The biggest question is how will the teenaged X-23 transition into the rest of X-Men universe after the movie, since the events of Wolverine 3 take place in the future. The new actress will be a few years younger than the new prime X-Men including Cyclops/Tye Sheridan, Jean Grey/Sophie Turner and Storm/Alexandra Shipp, so she would make a great fit in the next generation, as she continues journey towards becoming Wolverine. The saga of the jumbled X-Men timeline continues….
Wolverine 3 opens on March 2nd, 2017.
