There are very few can’t-miss directors working today in Tinsletown. However, if you were to make a shortlist of the top filmmakers in the business, it would be impossible to leave Christopher Nolan out of consideration.
The director cut his teeth in the indie world with movies such as Memento before making the surprising leap to the Dark Knight trilogy. However, while he still got the opportunity to direct smaller passion projects, such as The Prestige. He has since managed to find a way to combine high-brow filmmaking with blockbuster budgets and sensibilities, with movies such as Inception and Interstellar. All the while, always seeming to push his own scope in terms of material and genre.
Now Nolan is taking a stab at making a war film with his upcoming offering, Dunkirk. Last winter, audiences were treated to a short preview of the film before IMAX screenings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and now Warner Bros is releasing the full trailer for the film coming this summer. The film is based on the true events of the Battle of Dunkirk during World War II, where thousands of Allies had to stage an evacuation, after being surrounded on a beach by German forces.
Dunkirk will show multiple perspectives during the fight including at sea, on the beach, and in the air. Judging by Nolan’s previous work, the director will employ masterful script writing, cross-cutting and other editing techniques to increase the tension and drama. In a summer full of superheroes, this far from the typical fare and is shaping up to be a must-see. Check out the trailer:
“Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.
Dunkirk opens on July 21st, 2017.
