This past weekend Fox Studios released the final Wolverine film Logan to great success. Before the film begins, audiences were treated to a surprise short film starring Deadpool, that serves as a teaser trailer for Deadpool 2. It’s no secret that the movie is in pre-production and director David Leitch along with producer/star Ryan Reynolds are currently casting the leads. The mutant known as Cable is currently one of the hottest roles in Hollywood, according to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, while the other new lead, Domino, has been attracting a lot of talented actresses.
That Hashtag Show previously broke the news that Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sienna Miller had passed on the role, while Kerry Washington was under heavy consideration. However, this morning they have revealed a new actress that has moved to the front of the pack. Singer Janelle Monae has burst onto the movie scene after two consecutive high-profile roles in award-winning movies, Hidden Figures and Moonlight, and now is at the top of the Deadpool 2 casting wishlist.
It makes sense that the studio would want to strike while the fire is hot under the talented performer. Monae’s unique brand of sass and physicality perfectly fits the character of Domino. If you take a look back at our casting breakdown for the role, she is described as “witty personality” and “a no-nonsense badass,” two characteristics that the entertainer certainly embodies.
Monae has not been officially been cast as of today, however she does sit high on the production’s wishlist, along with the previously reported Kerry Washington. The production is prepping to shoot in a matter of months, so there should be movement and official announcements on both the Domino and Cable fronts shortly.
Deadpool 2 is expected to be released in 2018.
