While the X-Men cinematic universe has been around for over fifteen years, in some ways it’s just finding its stride. Fox Studios had their biggest success one year ago, when they gambled on a wacky side character named Deadpool. The R-rated superhero film broke many of the standard norms and conventions of the genre and carved out its own special place within comic to film adaptations.
Pre-production is heavily underway for the much anticipated sequel, with returning writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, star and producer Ryan Reynolds, and David Leitch (John Wick) taking over the director’s reigns. The production is still riding high off of the $780 million dollar success of last year’s release and fan’s bodies are collectively ready for more mayhem.
Little is known about the actual plot besides the fact that Marvel Comics’ standout, Cable, will be making his first live-action appearance. While many are expecting another character to make the transition to the big-screen, the mercenary known as Domino. Domino, also known as Neena Thurman, has the mutant ability to affect probabilities and the aptitude to kick ass.
Thanks to That Hashtag Show, we have this description and character breakdown for Deadpool 2 that screams Domino.
Female, All ethnicities Sexy, lithe and athletic. She has a witty personality. Neena is a no-nonsense badass who rarely shows her feeling. Highly capable, supremely confident and armored in . . . well ARMOR . . . and bullet-proof sarcasm. But beneath her shell she’s still and vulnerable and some soft, beating remnant of her humanity remains intact. In this scene we need to see both sides. When she can’t get what she needs with insults, bluster and threats we need to see some of that vulnerability. It’s hard for her to let down her guard, and in the mercenary community she grew up in showing compassion is almost embarrassing. We should feel like she’d be more comfortable killing Silberman than saying “Please”.
This description fits the character in more ways than one and seems to indicate that Domino will have a substantial role. It’s encouraging that they are holding colorblind casting, which makes sense for the character whose face will ultimately be painted white.
According to THS, the casting process has been underway and some notable actresses, including Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) and Sienna Miller (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), have already tested or have been approached. It seems that those two have either passed on the role, or been passed over for the part. However, Kerry Washington is said to be currently testing for the role and is the front-runner at this point. The Scandal actress is no stranger to feature films, with a resume that ranges from the Fantastic Four to Ray, so she would be an unexpected yet welcomed addition to the cast if it falls together.
It’s a very exciting time to be a fan of Deadpool. The movie is expected to go before cameras soon in order to hit its 2018 release date, so things should begin to move quickly.
Deadpool 2 is expected to be released in 2018.
